UGA Hosts Tournament; Takes 1st and 2nd

10.24.10 — UGA Mock Trial hosted 200 undergrads and dozens of attorneys this weekend at the Second Annual Classic City Invitational. The program's competing teams finished 1st and 2nd at the tournament, with records of 8-0 and 7-1, respectively.

UGA Mock Trial would like to thank all of the competing teams, our judges, our Signature Sponsor, King & Spalding, our Gold Sponsor, the Treacy Family, and Princeton Review, who provided the judges hospitality breakfast. We also extend thanks to UGA School of Law, who allowed us to host the tournament in their beautiful facilities.

Rounding out the top five at the tournament were the University of Florida, the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, and Furman University. The University of Southern California and the University of South Carolina received Honorable Mentions.

This year's invitational included 22 teams from 14 universities hailing from eight different states from as far away as California, and is one of a handful of tournaments in the country to be entirely run by undergraduates.

All of the competing teams qualified for Nationals last year, and four of the attending programs also qualified for the National Championship Tournament.

In addition to the tournament, UGA Mock Trial also hosted the first-ever Classic City Tailgate on Herty Field, located on UGA's historic North Campus within walking distance of the law school.The event included free food for the competing teams, as well as a live band, and followed the completion of the second round on Saturday.

UGA Mock Trial members winning individual awards at the tournament were Philip Oldham, who won an Outstanding Attorney award, and Katie Clifford, Muneeb Ahmed, and Steven Shelton, who won Outstanding Witness awards.

UGA team members competing at the Classic City Invitational on Team 1134, which finished undefeated in 1st place, were: Jarred Klorfein (E Board, '11), Isha Ghodke (Captain, '12), Alli Bailey ('14), Thomas Buscemi ('13), Katie Clifford ('12), Vera Maladtsova ('13), Madeline McCullers ('13), Philip Oldham ('14), and Clayton Sharp ('13).

Competing on UGA Team 1135, which finished in 2nd place at 7-1, were: Brandon Amey (E Board, '11), Curry Andrews (Captain, '11), Muneeb Ahmed ('12), Jessie Andrews ('12), Patrick Bennett ('13), Whitney Judson ('12), Katie King ('14), Ria Mehta ('13), and Steven Shelton ('13).
