In addition to team recognition, all tournaments give individual awards. In undergraduate Mock Trial, these awards are fairly difficult to receive.
Each scoring judge ranks the top attorneys and witnesses in a given round in order from first best to fourth best. Team members ranking first on a ballot receive 5 “ranks,” second receives 4 ranks, and so on. At the end of the tournament, the ranks for each team member on each side of the case are tallied.
Team members who compete in both rounds on a given side of the case have the possibility of receiving a total of 20 ranks (5 ranks per ballot, with 2 rounds and 2 ballots in each round). Each tournament sets its own minimum number of ranks necessary to receive an Outstanding Attorney or Outstanding Witness award. Usually this minimum is between 15 and 19 ranks.
Individual awards are given out prior to team awards at a tournament's Closing Ceremony. Team members who compete on both sides of the case have their ranks on each side tallied separately, and thus are eligible to win two awards if they receive enough ranks on both sides.
Tournaments generally reward Outstanding Attorneys and Witnesses with plaques or gavels.
