The University of Georgia Undergraduate Mock Trial Program is inviting high school Mock Trial participants throughout the state of Georgia and members of the community to take part in an exciting opportunity to learn more about our legal system.
If you're a high school student, a UGA student who is not a member of Mock Trial, or a member of the community, we'd love for you to serve as a juror at UGA Mock Trial's Second Annual Classic City Mock Trial Invitational Tournament. The tournament will be held in Athens on Saturday, October 23 and Sunday, October 24, 2010
The competition will include a field of 24 teams of college students from some of the finest undergraduate Mock Trial programs in the Southeast and nation.
Mock Trial is a competitive academic exercise in which students simulate civil and criminal trials using a fictional case. Through this fun and challenging exercise in which team members play the roles of attorneys and witnesses, the undergraduate participants improve their trial advocacy skills and knowledge of the law, as well as gain invaluable experience in public speaking, acting, and critical thinking.
As a juror, you will watch and take notes on the facts of the case. At the end of the trial, you will be asked to fill out a brief questionnaire, as well as tell the teams what your verdict would have been. Although your verdict will not impact the outcome of the round or the tournament, your insights as someone previously unfamiliar with the facts of the case will be very helpful for the teams as they try to refine their cases for the next competition.
For high school students who are currently members of their school's Mock Trial teams, serving as a juror is an ideal opportunity for you to learn by watching excellent undergraduate teams compete. For other volunteers, serving as a juror will be an engaging and enjoyable experience that gives you a new perspective on our justice system.
Jurors may volunteer for any, or all, of the four trials taking place on Saturday and Sunday. Please fill out the registration form indicating which time slots work for you. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time slot.
The tournament will take place on the University of Georgia's campus, within walking distance of beautiful downtown Athens. The specific location on campus, as well as directions to the site, will be provided well in advance of the event.
